Ethics of Fetal Surgery
نویسنده
چکیده
Surgeons sometimes operate on the developing fetuses in utero of pregnant women to treat a number of congential abnormalities, operations that have ethical aspects. A. William Liley performed the first successful fetal surgery, a blood transfusion, in New Zealand in 1963 to counteract the effects of hemolytic anemia [6], or Rh disease, on a fetus [7]. The ethical discussions surrounding fetal surgery are complex and are still being defined, as fetal surgery represents an emerging field of in utero medical interventions that impact the quality of life for both pregnant women and fetuses. Such discussions involve the ethical relationships between parents, fetuses, doctors, and health care organizations like hospitals. What may benefit the fetus [7] may harm the pregnant woman, and what may benefit the pregnant woman could negatively impact the viability [8] of the pregnancy [9]. Risks to the pregnant woman include preterm membrane rupture, preterm labor, wound infection, hemorrhage, loss of uterus [10], damage to the organs near the uterus [10], and possibly death. Fetal surgery does not always improve the quality of life for the developing fetus [7], and the risks and benefits of fetal surgery must be weighed and discussed between the medical team, the pregnant woman, and her partner to customize the most ethical plan of action.

Ethical challenges in fetal surgery
Fetal surgery has been practised for some decades now. However, it remains a highly complex area, both medically and ethically. This paper shows how the routine use of ultrasound has been a catalyst for fetal surgery, in creating new needs and new incentives for intervention. Some of the needs met by fetal surgery are those of parents and clinicians who experience stress while waiting for the b...
متن کاملA Review of the Basis of Fetal Dignity in Some Contemporary Medical Ethics Theories
The human moral or, in other words, his human dignity has long been the subject of discussions among various thinkers. Almost all theories that have addressed this issue are in principle the dignity of man and the supremacy of his position in relation to all beings, but what makes a different perspective on this topic is the criterion of this dignity and excellence. Making essential decisions f...
متن کاملPerpetuating Myths, Fables, and Fairy Tales: A Half Century of Electronic Fetal Monitoring.
Electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) entered clinical medical practice at the same time bioethics became reality. Bioethics changed the medical ethics landscape by replacing the traditional Hippocratic benign paternalism with patient autonomy, informed consent, beneficence, and nonmaleficence. But EFM use represents the polar opposite of bioethics' revered principles-it has been documented for hal...

This study was performed to achieve abortion in a short time and with minimum side effects in a bitch, as an alternative method for termination of unwanted pregnancy. The experimentation was performed on 10 privately owned crossbred pregnant bitches, in their late second trimester of pregnancy, having a variable number of fetuses (3 to 9). Fetal death was induced by transabdominal intracardiac ...
